The layout, the intricate designs, the calligraphy on the tiles, the latticework in the windows, the geometric patterns in the domes and apses, all of it is sure to leave a visitor spellbound. And even before this spell wears away, we kick off the special Rajasthan cycling tour in Udaipur, the city of lakes rightly nicknamed ‘Venice of the East

Day 1: Delhi Arrival

Welcome at the airport in Delhi. Our driver and tour guide pick you up to the hotel. As most of the flights from abroad arrive late night in Delhi, there is no sightseeing on the first day. But in case you’ve already landed in Delhi and have time on your hands, we transfer you to our hotel and take you for a sightseeing tour of Old and New Delhi. In Old Delhi, we visit the famous 17th century mosque Jama Masjid and the equally old and legendary Chandni Chowk market.Time permitting, the sightseeing tour may also take us to the Humayun’s Tomb and India Gate. Overnight will be at the hotel.

Built in the 17th century by the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan in memory of his beloved deceased wife Mumtaz Mahal, this magnificent ivory-white marble structure represents the acme of the Mughal art and architecture. A monument of love, the TajMahalis, in fact, a mausoleum housing the tombs of both Shah Jahan and MumtazMahal. It features exquisite artwork on tiles, sublime calligraphy of Persian poems carved on marble, and geometric latticework with intricate patterns that leave you baffled. Udaipur is called ‘Venice of the East’ and the ‘City of Lakes because of the seven lakes that surround it. It is a city steeped in the rich royal heritage of Rajasthan and has massive forts and palaces, some of which stand incredulously in the middle of the water. It takes nothing short of a whole day of cycling in and around Udaipur to appreciate this heritage. We start our biking tour right after breakfast. Cycling through the first few kilometers in the busy traffic can be testing, but once we reach the outskirts of the city, fun begins. We take you to an extensive tour of the best spots in Udaipur while keeping off the crowds. You cycle past small villages and witness the locals going about their daily life. We have packed lunch on the bank of a lake and continue exploring Udaipur till the evening. We have dinner at Ambrai restaurant, which is one of the most famous and best located restaurants in Rajasthan. The food it serves is simply mouth-watering. The last 5-7km of the day’s ride is a steep Ascend, so we prefer to load the bikes on our support vehicle and drive to the hotel, but if you wish to cycle your way up, you’re welcome to take that challenge. The highlight of the day is the visit to the famous Kumbhalgarh Fort, a 15th century Mewar fortress built by Rana Kumbha. A world heritage site, it is also the birthplace of Maharana Pratap, the great king, and warrior of Mewar. The wall of this fort stretches for over 38 km and is claimed to be the second-longest continuous wall after the Great Wall of China. If we miss visiting the fort in the evening, we can always plan a visit on the morning of the following day. (Approx 40KMS of cycling),(Ascend of 615 Meters)

After breakfast, we start cycling from Ranakpur hotel to Jojawar through Desuri. The day’s biking route takes us through the scenic terrain of a verdant jungle bordering the foothills of the Aravalli mountain range. We come upon local villages that are full of colour and clatter. It’s as close a look one can get of rural Rajasthan while on the move. The villagers here are primarily cattle herders from the Rabari sect. Legend has it that the men of this sect married the daughters of gods, rather than mortal women, earning the epithet of Rabari (those who go out of the path). Once nomadic, the Rabari men, by tradition, are camel herders and they travel vast distances in search of grazing land. The women stay at home and run the village. The Rabari sect worships the goddess Mata Devi. They are a strong and proud people and their women wear distinctive black headscarves and heavy brass earrings. We get an up-close look at the culture of these people while cycling through the villages towards our destination Jojawar. Dinner and overnight at the hotel. (Approx 60KMS of cycling)

Day 8 : Jojawar - Sardar Samand lake (B, L, D)

Jojawar is a village that provides an access route to the region of Mewar. Its strategic location is the reason behind the many battles fought for its control in the past. As we cycle out of Jojawar, we pass through a gorgeous landscape. On the way, we may chance upon some wildlife like camels, blackbucks or deer. Cycling through this stretch is pure joy. The day ends on a high with our arrival at Sardar Samand Lake Palace which is surrounded by a calm lake. Previously, this palace used to be the hunting lodge of the Maharaja. Now, it is converted into a hotel. The lake attracts several migratory and local birds such as the yellow-legged green pigeon, Himalayan griffon, and Dalmatian pelican. The evening is spent lounging around and taking in the serene beauty of the place. (Approx 60KMS of cycling)
